Last weekend we had the opportunity to experience a cultural phenomenon here in Mexico – the Lucha Libradores! Originally just Zam and Bruce set off one Thursday night to go and watch some matches, but when they got to the arena the date had been changed to Sunday. Ziko had been heartbroken when they had gone that Thursday night and was ecstatic about the date change because it meant he had a chance to go to. In the end, we decided to make it a family event and we all went. I wasn’t too thrilled about the prospect of going and was a bit concerned about taking all three kids. I thought Hizee would be bored after the first match and didn’t want the kids to see scantily clad women prancing around the ring between matches. Well, it turns out that the only ring-side women were older (60 plus) ladies from the crowd who stormed the ring to chastise the “bad guy” wrestlers when their “good guy” wrestler wasn’t winning. This was a beyond comical sight and the crowd (consisting mostly of women and children) roared as an old women came down from the crowd and proceeded to relentlessly smack the “bad guy’s” biceps! (This was NOT staged by the way!) It turned out to be a hoot of a time and Hizee wasn’t bored for a second. In fact she was the one who was most into it out of the three kids.
In between matches and after the final match all the kids at the arena got into the ring to run around (even tho’ there was a sign prohibiting them to do so…the security guards just smiled.) Bruce really had to resist the urge to jump in...instead he simply watched the kids from the sidelines.
